Jake poses in front of a crowd bustling by in Davis Square, Somerville

When I knock doors in Wards 6 and 7, it's common to hear about Davis Square. Residents express concerns about the growing number of unhoused folks in Seven Hills Park and how Statue Park is seeing an increasing incidence of worrying behavior from people struggling with substance abuse. The recent discussion of a potential proposal for a high-rise tower also has generated a lot of interest and debate in the neighborhood and beyond.

I've been attending monthly meetings with Davis Square merchants, and I hear echoes of the same resident concerns from business owners. The negative press and bad narrative about the square makes the problem worse, with some people opting to stay away entirely. The community wants to see Davis Square get back to being a vibrant place where people of all ages enjoy coming to shop, dine, drink, and play.

I've written on my website previously about both the public health and public safety issues impacting Davis and the potential tower proposal, but it's clear right now that Davis Square area residents and businesses are feeling overlooked and dismissed by the current administration. People want a mayor who is available and listens to the people -- and a government that is accountable and communicative. These are core values of mine as a public servant and will be cornerstones of my administration as your next mayor.

I'm continuing knocking doors -- including on my anniversary -- and raising funds to help get our message out as the September 16 preliminary election gets closer. If you're able to give your time, talent, or treasure to the campaign, I'm asking for your achieve victory and move this city forward.

KNOCK KNOCK: Spread the Word | Canvassing Event Saturday, July 12, 10 AM, NOON 3 PM Shifts | RSVP: tinyurl.com/712canvass

Our campaign has some real momentum this month on the doors and on the financial front so far this month, and we need your help to keep that going. In addition to tonight's phone bank event, we have another Saturday door-knocking opportunity. The early response for this weekend has been strong, and we want you to help make it even bigger!

There are time slots available in the morning, mid-day, and late afternoon, so please sign up for a slot today. And have your friends and neighbors do the same! Here is the link to RSVP for Saturday's canvass.

If this weekend doesn't work for you, we always have more opportunities to join the campaign coming up. We will of course be posting about those here, but the best way to stay up to date is to volunteer with the campaign to get direct notification of opportunities. You can register as a volunteer here.
