Somerville Planning Board Seeks Two Members

The Somerville Planning Board seeks one full member and one alternate member, and all Somerville residents are invited to apply. A background in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, urban planning, and/or land-use law is beneficial but not required. Applicants should be interested in job creation, affordable housing development, and open space and multimodal transportation strategies.

The Planning Board reviews long-term and large-scale planning throughout the city. It approves and implements the SomerVision Comprehensive Plan, and it grants special permits for development projects in key transformational areas. The Planning Board also provides recommendations to the City Council on amendments to the Somerville Zoning Ordinance.

The Board has full members and alternate members. Alternate members participate in all discussion on items before the Board and vote in the place of full members when full members are absent from a meeting. The full member will serve the remainder of a term through June 14, 2024, and the alternate will serve the remainder of a term through June 14, 2023, both with possible reappointment for a three-year term.

The Board typically meets on the first and third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. Full members earn a monthly stipend of $495.33, and alternate members earn a monthly stipend of $247.67. Applications will be reviewed by the Mayor’s Appointments Advisory Committee. New members must be approved by the City Council.

Applications are due Friday, June 10. Interested residents should send a resume and cover letter to planning@somervillema.gov or to the Planning, Preservation, & Zoning Division, Somerville City Hall, 93 Highland Ave., Somerville, MA 02143. Please contact planning@somervillema.gov or (617) 625-6600  ext. 2500 with questions.
